Cranston Street Court

On September 17, 2020, My HomeCourt and Providence College Galleries, in collaboration with Providence Parks, unveiled a newly constructed outdoor public basketball court at Cranston Street Park on Providence’s West side. On the occasion of our court opening, our MHC Creative Director & Curator-at-Large with Providence College Galleries, Kate McNamara invited Providence-based DJ and multi-disciplinary producer, WHERE'S NASTY to create a playlist inspired by Andrea’s court design. Read about the story behind the tunes and take a listen!

The opening of the latest court project from MyHomeCourt in Providence made me think of one of my favorite video games of all time, NBA Street Volume 2. The in-game soundtrack was as iconic as the actual game. There is a generation of kids who will always think of their experiences playing NBA Street whenever they hear Pete Rock & CL Smooth's track They Reminisce Over You. The amazing thing about the game is that it embodied a real aspect of me and my friends everyday summer experience, playing 3-on-3 basketball outside. For this My HomeCourt inspired playlist, I wanted to build on the feelings that the monumental soundtrack gave me growing up, while asking myself, "What would that sound like in 2020?" — WHERE'S NASTY

Meet the Artist

The 2020 basketball court features a commissioned court mural by renowned artist Andrea Bergart.

Bergart received a Fulbright Scholarship to Ghana, West Africa where she researched the bead and textile industries, and has participated in artist residency programs in Senegal and Kenya. Most recently, she received a US embassy grant to travel to the United Arab Emirates.  Bergart's work has been exhibited in New York, California, New Orleans, Boston and the UK and was included in the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Bergart lives and works in New York City and her paintings reference diverse visual traditions including African textiles, urban fashion, outlines on playing fields and basketball courts and geometric abstraction.  Her involvement in fashion and Downtown Girls Basketball (an all-women basketball community) inspired her to design basketball handbags, as well as paintings and solar prints highlighting WNBA and NBA players and culture.
